Restarting Weight-Loss Medication Safely

Following a reduction in doses during the holiday season for some indulgent eating, numerous individuals are now resuming their weight management treatments. Healthcare professionals caution about more pronounced adverse reactions. This follows findings from CheqUp research, which revealed that almost two-thirds of GLP-1 users who lowered their intake intended to resume their standard schedule only after January 1st.

Stopping therapy abruptly can impact hunger, digestion, and blood sugar regulation, especially with increased carb and sweetener consumption. Experts note that inconsistent usage might heighten the chance of recurring issues and unwanted effects.

Insights from a Pharmacy Expert

Aaron Arman, Chief Pharmacist at CheqUp, commented: "We generally recommend avoiding sudden halts in GLP-1 therapy unless medically necessary, as it could result in elevated blood glucose levels and quick weight recapture. Individuals might not realize how much such interruptions disrupt sustained goals."

"These drugs function by managing appetite, metabolism, and sugar levels, so discontinuing them abruptly eliminates those safeguards, complicating the return to healthy habits. Those who temporarily halt their meds could face more intense side effects upon resumption, requiring adaptation time."

Guidelines for Resuming Treatment

Aaron offers recommendations for those picking up their weight-loss drugs in the New Year:

  • Avoid Doubling Doses: Never take an extra amount if you skip one. These medications accumulate gradually, so overdoing it won't accelerate results but raises side effect risks. Inspect your injection device before reuse.
  • Storage Checks: Ensure proper refrigeration (typically 2-8°C) before restarting. Verify the solution is transparent and particle-free. Discard if cloudy, tinted, or particulate, and get a replacement.

Specific Instructions for Wegovy (semaglutide)

If one or two doses have been missed and fewer than five days have elapsed since the last planned shot, proceed with the injection as soon as recalled and revert to your weekly routine. If over five days, omit the skipped one and await the next scheduled date.

Specific Instructions for Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

For missing one or two doses within four days of the due time, administer promptly and resume the normal weekly pattern. If exceeding four days, skip and hold for the following regular day. Consult a doctor if several weeks have passed.

If three or more doses (about three weeks) are omitted, reach out to your healthcare provider prior to restarting. They might suggest a reduced starting dose or modified plan to minimize adverse reactions.

Reporting Side Effects

Report any adverse responses upon restart, particularly if they seem worse than initial experiences. Contact your prescriber for secure management strategies. Health tracking apps like Shotlee can assist in monitoring progress and symptoms effectively.
