How BMI is Calculated

BMI Formula: Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)² = BMI

Example: A person who weighs 180 lbs (81.6 kg) and is 5'8" (1.73m) tall has a BMI of 27.3 kg/m².

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. Your doctor will consider other factors like body composition, medical history, and lab values when determining GLP-1 eligibility.

FAQ

What BMI do I need for Ozempic?

Ozempic (semaglutide) is FDA-approved for Type 2 diabetes at any BMI. For weight loss specifically, Wegovy (same drug, higher doses) requires BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition.

Can I get Mounjaro with a BMI of 28?

Zepbound (tirzepatide for weight loss) requires BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity like hypertension, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea.

Is BMI the only factor for eligibility?

No. Doctors also consider your medical history, current medications, and overall health. People with a history of thyroid cancer or pancreatitis may not be candidates for GLP-1 medications.
