Conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly criticized Oprah Winfrey for remarks linking overeating to an "obesity gene" in a new book on obesity and GLP-1 medications.
Oprah Winfrey's Take on Obesity and GLP-1
Oprah Winfrey collaborated with endocrinologist Dr. Ania Jastreboff on Enough: Your Health, Your Weight and What It's Like to Be Free, released January 13 by Avid Reader Press. Winfrey shared her weight loss journey, crediting GLP-1 drugs for quieting constant "food noise"—an urge to eat.
On The View, Winfrey stated: "I understand that if you carry the obesity gene, if that is what you have, that is what makes you overeat. You don't overeat and become obese. Obesity causes you to overeat." She described food noise as a lifelong challenge for those with obesity.
Megyn Kelly's Response: A 'Cop-Out'?
In her January 16 podcast episode, Kelly discussed Winfrey's comments with journalist Maureen Callahan. Kelly said: "I do like I have nothing against the GLP-1s, but I do think this like, 'It's a disease and I had no personal responsibility in my morbidly obese body' is a cop-out."
