Travel Alert for 33M+ Americans on Weight Loss Injections This Thanksgiving

Medical experts have issued a travel warning for millions of Americans who are taking weight loss medication as Thanksgiving approaches.

It's estimated that more than 33 million Americans currently have prescriptions for these medications, but many may not realize how this impacts their travel arrangements.

A medical expert has cautioned travelers about six essential factors they must remember during the Thanksgiving holiday.

"When travelling with any type of medication, it's essential to keep this in your hand luggage, making it easily accessible during the flight and available to you in the event of hold luggage issues at your destination," they advised.

Around 12% of the adult population in the US, approximately 33.6 million individuals, are using weight loss medications.

Whether these increasingly popular medications are being taken for health or cosmetic purposes, anyone traveling with injections needs to take certain steps before flying. They should also be prepared to take extra steps at the airport.

In addition to this, the medication's storage instructions should be carefully considered when packing for trips.

For instance, Wegovy should be refrigerated between 36°F and 46°F before its initial use. After the first use, it can be stored at room temperature (46°F to 86°F) for a maximum of 28 days.

Therefore, these medications must be stored at the correct temperature in luggage to ensure they remain effective.

Using an insulated travel case can be beneficial; however, make sure the medication doesn't come into direct contact with an ice pack.

Visiting a doctor to obtain a note before packing can prevent delays with the TSA.

This note informs TSA about the prescription, which is particularly crucial in countries with specific medication regulations, in case any questions arise.

Additionally, travelers should proactively declare their medication rather than waiting for a security inspection to prevent potential problems.

Since these injections are liquid, they are more likely to be flagged during security checks than tablets.

Furthermore, because they are considered "sharps," their nature must be disclosed to avoid being seen as a threat to other passengers on the flight.

If the TSA does not approve the medication, it will be confiscated.

Besides informing border security about medications, travel insurance documentation must also be updated.

Failure to do so could invalidate the travel insurance, which could be costly.

Declaring medication on travel insurance can help cover any damages, loss, or issues related to the prescription.

Health tracking apps like Shotlee can help monitor medication schedules and provide reminders for timely doses.

Travelers should check with their insurance provider before traveling to determine if this medication rule impacts their policy.

The last recommendation from the medical expert is to ensure an alarm is set to take medication at the same time, regardless of long-haul flights or changes in time zones.

This can help prevent any side effects from missed doses.
