More UK Men Using Weight Loss Injections as 'Significant Shift' Emerges
New research has revealed an increasing number of British men are opting for fat jabs in order to lose weight. Previously, women significantly outnumbered men in the use of these injections, but a major prescriber of these medications reports that men are catching up.
Chemist4u data indicates a shift from a 90% female to 10% male ordering ratio, to a current split of 60% female and 40% male. James O'Loan, CEO of Chemist4U, noted increasing evidence of men prioritizing their health, citing examples such as taxi drivers seeking treatment during business trips.
According to O'Loan, one individual was unable to undergo a hernia operation due to being overweight, but has now been able to have the procedure following weight loss. He added that men might be less inclined to discuss their health, possibly due to social taboos or discomfort. However, he emphasized that a brilliant shift is definitely becoming apparent.
GLP-1 medications function by mimicking a natural hormone, which helps to manage type 2 diabetes. These medications also aid in weight loss by both slowing digestion and suppressing appetite. Health tracking apps like Shotlee can help monitor the progress and effects of such treatments.
The number of NHS prescriptions has increased to 280 per hour, with a total of 201,686 prescriptions issued in September for one popular injection. Furthermore, an estimated 1.4 million individuals in the UK are believed to have self-funded their weight loss endeavors.
O'Loan stated that the momentum surrounding these new obesity treatments is building, creating a sense of excitement. He believes that these treatments have instilled confidence in individuals where previous methods have failed.
However, while these injections can provide a convenient solution for weight loss, some users have reported experiencing adverse effects. For example, singer Robbie Williams attributed his gradual vision loss to weight loss injections like Mounjaro. He reported that, despite being prescribed the medication for rapid weight gain, he believed the injections were causing his eyesight to deteriorate rapidly.
Williams described his vision problems, saying that players at a football game appeared as blobs and that he couldn't clearly see female fans during his concerts. Despite his sight loss, Williams admitted the injections were so effective that he would continue using them until he lost sight in one eye. He is now among over 300 cases reported to authorities regarding gradual sight loss potentially caused by Mounjaro.
